Hackaday Prize 2022: Drying Clothes With Ultrasound

Clothing dryers are good, and a critical aspect of contemporary existence, but they do use a ton of strength. [Mike Rigsby] resolved to see if there was a much more economical strategy of drying outfits that could compete with resistive heating for effectiveness. Consequently, he began function on an ultrasonic apparel dryer.

In early screening, he located ultrasonic transducers could in fact blast droplets of dampness away from cloth, effectively drying it. However, as opposed to heat, the ultrasonic field does not effectively permeate by a pile of clothes, nor can it readily be utilised with a spinning drum to dry quite a few clothes at after.

[Mike]’s latest experiments are centered around utilizing a basket-style technique, with a bed of ultrasonic transducers at the base. The plan is that the basket will shake back and forth, agitating the load of apparel and permitting the various garments to successfully get hold of the transducers. It is nevertheless a work in progress, but it is an appealing technique to the trouble. We’d like to see a comparison of the power use of a complete-scale make versus a standard dryer.

We’ve listened to of the ultrasonic drying strategy in advance of, way too, with the Department of Energy researching the matter. It could just be that we’ll all be working with ultrasonic dryers in a long time to arrive!
